Klépierre Reaffirms Its European Leadership in Sustainable Retail Real Estate
Klépierre, the European leader in shopping centers, has once again confirmed its position as a benchmark for sustainable retail real estate. In the 2026 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB), the Group ranks first in its reference category, listed retail real estate companies in Europe, and first among all listed real estate companies in Europe, across all asset classes. With a record score of 95.5/100, Klépierre delivers its strongest performance to date.
Beyond these two European distinctions, GRESB also ranks Klépierre as the second-best listed retail real estate company worldwide and the third-best listed real estate company in Europe, further demonstrating the consistency and strength of its long-standing sustainability commitment.
These results recognize the day-to-day efforts of teams across the Group’s shopping centers. For several years, Klépierre has pursued an ambitious approach aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of its operations while preparing its assets for future climate challenges. This commitment is reflected in tighter control of energy consumption, continued reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and the expansion of renewable energy production across the portfolio. Teams have also continued adapting shopping centers to increasingly frequent heatwaves by combining innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence-based solutions, with passive measures designed to improve visitor comfort while limiting energy demand. At the same time, Klépierre has strengthened its circular economy initiatives by developing innovative approaches to improve waste management and increase waste recovery rates across its shopping centers.
These achievements are part of Act4Good®, Klépierre’s CSR strategy launched in February 2023. Through this roadmap, the Group is pursuing a clear ambition: to build the most sustainable platform for commerce by 2030. The strategy is built around four complementary pillars:
- Achieving net-zero carbon emissions;
- Serving communities and the regions where its shopping centers operate;
- Growing people among employees, partners, and visitors;
- Promoting sustainable lifestyles across its entire ecosystem.
About GRESB
GRESB (Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark) is the global ESG benchmark for the real estate sector and a leading reference for financial markets. It provides a standardized framework and methodology for assessing the sustainability performance of real estate portfolios and publishes annual global benchmark data. The GRESB assessment methodology is based on two components:
- A quantitative assessment, which evaluates individual assets on criteria such as energy performance, waste management, certifications, greenhouse gas emissions, and water consumption;
- A qualitative assessment, which evaluates companies on ESG governance, strategy and policies, risk management and reporting processes, and stakeholder engagement practices.
